Books in the Park Assistant

The Pueblo City County Library District is seeking two seasonal Books in the Park Assistants to provide program support to the Summer Reading Program by actively participating in program preparation, activities and program promotion. The ideal candidate will enjoy working outdoors at a variety of public park locations with youth, volunteers and team members. The purpose of the position is to connect to the community to spread awareness of library services and to promote the joy of reading.

Seasonal Position: June 1st - August 1st

Hours: 24 hours per week; typically on Monday through Friday from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Wage: $14.85 per hour

Primary Responsibilities

The Books in the Park Assistant reports to Manager of Youth Services within the User Services department. This position works collaboratively with the Youth Services team, volunteers, outside youth organizations and customers of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

Provides excellent customer service by interacting with program participants and engaging them to participate in program activities.

Promotes the joy of reading.

Promotes Summer Reading Program themes and leads activities in a park setting while offering creative contributions.

Assists with story times, sets up crafts, snacks and book carts of materials for participants to check out.

Loads and unloads the Books in the Park trailer with a variety of materials that appeal to all audiences.

Monitors the program area and demonstrates good interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills.

Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: Basic math and English language skills, both written and verbal, are required. Spanish speaking skills are a plus. Experience working with youth is preferred.

  1. Skills and Abilities: Must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and problem solving skills. Ability to encourage children and teens to participate in group activities and promote the joy of reading. Ability to organize and present information to groups. Ability to lead programs to include a variety of activities. Ability to monitor a diverse group of people and maintain a positive atmosphere.

Physical Requirements:

This job is physically demanding requiring the ability to do repetitive work including hours of standing, bending, squatting, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling. Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds and push - pull a fully loaded book cart weighing up to 200 pounds.

Other Requirements: Position requires working outdoors and experiencing a variety of weather conditions.
